Plant-based Diet

A plant-based diet is a dietary pattern centered on vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds, with animal-derived foods minimized or excluded; it matters because food composition influences metabolism and overall health. Dietary fiber is fermented by gut microorganisms into short-chain fatty acids, while plant unsaturated fats and phytochemicals can affect glucose regulation, lipid metabolism, and inflammatory signaling. In biology and nutrition research, plant-based diets provide a framework for studying diet–microbiome interactions and chronic disease risk. Their applications include nutrition planning, preventive health research, and evaluation of sustainable food systems, although nutritional adequacy depends on dietary variety and appropriate nutrient sources.

Transmitting Plant Viruses Using Whiteflies

Improving our understanding of and our ability to manage many of the insect-transmitted plant viruses requires the use of the vector. Insect transmission of plant viruses is a tritrophic interaction, and as such requires the manipulation of insects, virus, and plant. Vectors must be reared in large numbers and manipulated in such a way as to insure high rates of transmission to test plants. The basics of rearing and manipulating the whitefly, Bemisa tabaci (Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), a vector of...

Plant Diversity - Concepts

From Water to Land Kingdom Plantae first appeared about 410 million years ago as green algae transitioned from water to land. Though challenging, this transition benefited early colonizers in several ways. Initially, most living organisms (including plants and animals) were ocean dwelling, making aquatic environments crowded and highly competitive. In contrast, land was a relatively uncolonized environment with ample resources and little to no predators or competitors. Terrestrial environments...

Viewing Prepared Slides ExpandTo start the exercise, first split up into groups and find a station with a compound microscope, dissecting microscope and one prepared slide. HYPOTHESES: The alternative hypothesis for this experiment might be that plants have specific adaptations that allow them to survive and reproduce in their own individual terrestrial environments. The null hypothesis for this experiment is that all plants have the same adaptations to live in terrestrial habitats. Find the...
