Pressure Flow Relationships

Pressure-flow relationships describe how differences in pressure drive fluid movement through biological systems, linking driving forces, flow rate, and resistance. Flow occurs down a pressure gradient, increasing as the gradient rises and decreasing as resistance increases; in cylindrical tubes, radius has a particularly strong effect on resistance, as described by Poiseuille’s law. In biology, these relationships help explain blood circulation, airflow through the respiratory tract, and transport through narrow vessels or channels. Understanding how vessel diameter, fluid viscosity, and obstruction influence flow supports analysis of normal physiology and disorders affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.

Pressure Relationships in Thoracic Cavity

Breathing, otherwise known as pulmonary ventilation, is the process of air movement into and out of the lungs. The main mechanisms propelling pulmonary ventilation are atmospheric pressure (Patm), intra-pulmonary (Ppul ) or intra-alveolar pressure (Palv) within the alveoli, and intrapleural pressure (Pip) within the pleural cavity. Breathing Mechanisms Both intra-alveolar and intrapleural pressures rely on specific lung properties. The ability to breathe—allowing air to enter the lungs during...

What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

The laser heated diamond anvil cell combined with synchrotron micro-diffraction techniques allows researchers to explore the nature and properties of new phases of matter at extreme pressure and temperature (PT) conditions. Heterogeneous samples can be characterized in situ under high pressure by 2D mapping and combined powder, single-crystal and multigrain diffraction approaches.

Cross Cylindrical Flow: Measuring Pressure Distribution and Estimating Drag Coefficients

Source: David Guo, College of Engineering, Technology, and Aeronautics (CETA), Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU), Manchester, New Hampshire The pressure distributions and drag estimations for cross cylindrical flow have been investigated for centuries. By ideal inviscid potential flow theory, the pressure distribution around a cylinder is vertically symmetric. The pressure distribution upstream and downstream of the cylinder is also symmetric, which results in a zero-net drag force.
