Semispinalis Capitis

Semispinalis capitis is a deep intrinsic muscle of the back and neck that links the upper thoracic and lower cervical vertebrae with the occipital bone, helping stabilize and position the head. Its fibers arise from transverse processes and attach between the superior and inferior nuchal lines; contracting on both sides extends the head and neck, while one-sided contraction contributes to rotation toward the opposite side. In biology and anatomy, this muscle illustrates the transversospinalis group and its role in postural control. Identifying its attachments and actions supports the interpretation of movement, physical examination, medical imaging, and procedures involving the posterior neck.
