Smoking Risk Factor

A smoking risk factor is the increased likelihood of disease or impaired health associated with using tobacco products or inhaling tobacco smoke. Smoke delivers nicotine and thousands of chemicals that can promote oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, vascular injury, and DNA damage, while nicotine reinforces dependence through stimulation of brain reward pathways. In biology and public health research, smoking is studied as a modifiable contributor to cancer, cardiovascular disease, respiratory disorders, and adverse reproductive outcomes. Identifying these mechanisms supports risk assessment, prevention strategies, cessation programs, and investigations into how environmental exposures influence human health.

Factors Affecting the Risk of Infection

2023

The hosts' susceptibility to infection depends on several factors. The integrity of the skin and mucous membranes helps protect the body against microbial attacks. When the skin is altered, the chance of infection, limb loss, and even death increases. The integrity and count of the white blood cells help the body resist pathogens and fight infection. When impaired, it reduces the body's resistance to pathogens. The acidic pH levels of the gastrointestinal, genitourinary tracts, and skin create...

Drug Toxicity: Risk factors

2026

Adverse Drug Reactions (ADRs) are potential complications that arise during pharmacotherapy, influenced by multiple risk factors. Age plays a significant role; both neonates and the elderly are at heightened risk due to their respective immature and diminished metabolic and elimination processes. Gender also impacts ADRs, with females experiencing a 1.5 to 1.7-fold greater risk than males, which may be linked to pharmacokinetic, pharmacodynamic, and hormonal differences. Notably, neonates, the...

This protocol describes a method for exposing rodents to electronic cigarette vapor (E-vapor) and cigarette smoke. Exposure chambers are constructed by modifying anesthesia chambers with an automated pumping system that delivers E-vapor or cigarette smoke to rodents. This system can easily be modified to accommodate many experimental endpoints.

Fundus Photography as a Convenient Tool to Study Microvascular Responses to Cardiovascular Disease Risk Factors in Epidemiological Studies
