Surgical Implantation

Surgical implantation is a medical procedure that places a device, tissue, or biological material inside the body to restore function, deliver therapy, or replace damaged structures. During implantation, surgeons create a controlled access site, position the implant in the target tissue, and secure it while maintaining sterility and limiting tissue injury; subsequent healing may involve inflammation, vascularization, and integration with surrounding cells. In biology, implantation models help researchers study biocompatibility, tissue repair, immune responses, and interactions between living systems and engineered materials. These studies support the development of prostheses, drug-delivery systems, biosensors, and regenerative therapies.
