Synchronized Cell Populations

Synchronized cell populations are groups of cells that occupy the same stage of the cell cycle, allowing researchers to examine stage-specific biological events. Synchronization is typically achieved by temporarily arresting cells at a defined checkpoint or phase, then releasing them together so they progress through the cycle in a coordinated manner; methods may include serum deprivation, chemical inhibitors, or mitotic selection. In biology, these populations help clarify how DNA replication, gene expression, chromosome segregation, and cell division change over time. They also support studies of cell-cycle regulation, developmental processes, disease mechanisms, and the timing of responses to experimental treatments.

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Three-phase wound-rotor synchronous generators are the main source of electrical power worldwide. They require a prime mover and an exciter in order to generate power. The prime mover can be a turbine spun by fluid (gas or liquid), thus the sources of the fluid can be water running off a dam through a long nozzle, steam from water evaporated using burned coal, etc. Most power plants including coal,...

We report two cell synchronization protocols that provide a context for studying events related to specific phases of the cell cycle. We show that this approach is useful for analyzing the regulation of specific genes in an unperturbed cell cycle or upon exposure to agents affecting the cell cycle.

Synchronization of bacterial cells is essential for studies of the bacterial cell cycle and development. Caulobacter crescentus is synchronizable through density centrifugation allowing a rapid and powerful tool for studies of the bacterial cell cycle. Here we provide a detailed protocol for the synchronization of Caulobacter cells.

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Three-phase wound-rotor synchronous motors are less popular than permanent magnet rotor synchronous motors due to the brushes required for the rotor field. Synchronous generators are much more common and available in most existing power plants, as they have excellent frequency and voltage regulation. Synchronous motors have the advantage of almost 0% speed regulation due to the fact that the rotor...
