Uniform Dispersion

Uniform dispersion is a spatial distribution pattern in which individuals of a population occur at relatively equal distances from one another. In biology, this arrangement usually develops when organisms compete for limited resources, defend territories, or inhibit nearby individuals through antagonistic interactions, creating regular spacing across a habitat. Ecologists identify uniform dispersion by mapping organism locations and comparing the observed pattern with random or clumped distributions. Studying this pattern helps reveal how competition, territoriality, social behavior, and environmental conditions shape population structure, providing insight into species interactions, habitat use, and the organization of biological communities.

The uniform distribution is a continuous probability distribution of events with an equal probability of occurrence. This distribution is rectangular. Two essential properties of this distribution are The area under the rectangular shape equals 1. There is a correspondence between the probability of an event and the area under the curve.Further, the mean and standard deviation of the uniform distribution can be calculated when the lower and upper cut-offs, denoted as a and b,...

Ecology is the study of how organisms interact with their environment and with one another. An important aspect of ecology is understanding where species are found and how individuals are distributed within those areas. The geographic range of a species refers to the total area where its members are located, while dispersion describes the pattern of spacing of individuals within that range.Geographic Range and Dispersion PatternsWithin a species’ geographic range, individuals may be distributed...

2025

Here, we present a protocol to adapt the Taylor dispersion experiment to the microscale using microchannels fabricated in-house with a desktop craft cutter. The experimental platform can be used to compute the diffusion coefficient of single-species passive tracers and to visualize multispecies ion interaction and separation.

Detection of Biofilm Disassembly Through a Dispersion Assay

The video showcases a biofilm dispersion assay using a multi-well plate. Buffer and glucose treatment disassemble the biofilm, releasing bacteria, while bile salts induce stress, retaining bacteria in the protective extracellular polymeric substance. Higher dispersion with buffer and glucose confirms successful biofilm disassembly, estimated by colony forming units measurement.
