Weight Loss Measurement

Weight loss measurement is the quantitative assessment of changes in body mass and composition, helping distinguish shifts in fat, lean tissue, and body water. It commonly combines standardized body-weight measurements with indicators such as body mass index, waist circumference, or body-composition analysis; repeated measurements under consistent conditions reduce the influence of hydration, glycogen storage, and daily variation. In biology and health research, these measures help evaluate energy-balance interventions, metabolic responses, and disease-related changes. Accurate interpretation supports nutrition studies, obesity research, clinical monitoring, and assessment of whether an intervention changes fat mass, preserves muscle, or primarily alters fluid balance.

Piping Networks and Pressure Losses

2023

Source: Alexander S Rattner, Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA This experiment introduces the measurement and modeling of pressure losses in piping networks and internal flow systems. In such systems, frictional flow resistance from channel walls, fittings, and obstructions causes mechanical energy in the form of fluid pressure to be converted to heat. Engineering analyses are needed to size flow hardware to ensure...

Line Loss

The different configurations of source-load connections include wye (star) and delta connections. The relationship between line and phase voltages and currents varies depending on the configuration. When the source is supplying power, it is transmitted through the wires to the load, and during this transmission, some power is absorbed by the wires, leading to line loss. Line loss impacts power delivery efficiency in a balanced three-phase circuit. The symmetry in such a circuit simplifies the...

Weighted Mean

While taking the arithmetic, geometric, or harmonic mean of a sample data set, equal importance is assigned to all the data points. However, all the values may not always be equally important in some data sets. An intrinsic bias might make it more important to give more weightage to specific values over others. For example, consider the number of goals scored in the matches of a tournament. While computing the average number of goals scored in the tournament, it may be more important to...

This protocol describes the quantification of heat transmission through a flat skinned avian specimen using a thermal camera and hot water bath. The method allows obtaining of quantitative, comparative data about the thermal performance of feather coats across species using dried flat skin specimens.

Reducing Line Loss

2024

In a three-phase circuit, line loss is an indicator of energy dissipated as heat due to the resistance of transmission lines. To address this, incorporating transformers into the system—a step-up transformer at the source and a step-down transformer at the load—is a strategic solution. Two three-phase transformers are introduced to improve this. With a step-up transformer at the source, the voltage is increased, thereby reducing the current in the transmission lines since power loss in...
