Planar Crystals

Planar crystals are crystalline materials in which atoms, ions, or molecules form highly ordered, extended two-dimensional layers or sheets, making them important for understanding structure–property relationships in chemistry. Their geometry typically arises from strong covalent or ionic bonding within a plane combined with weaker interactions between planes, while solvent, temperature, and supersaturation can influence crystal growth and morphology. Planar crystals support structural analysis through diffraction methods and provide platforms for studying anisotropic conductivity, reactivity, and molecular packing. Layered materials such as graphene and other two-dimensional solids also have applications in catalysis, sensing, energy storage, and nanoscale electronics.

Crystal Field Theory - Tetrahedral and Square Planar Complexes

2020

Tetrahedral Complexes Crystal field theory (CFT) is applicable to molecules in geometries other than octahedral. In octahedral complexes, the lobes of the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals point directly at the ligands. For tetrahedral complexes, the d orbitals remain in place, but with only four ligands located between the axes. None of the orbitals points directly at the tetrahedral ligands. However, the dx2−y2 and dz2 orbitals (along the Cartesian axes) overlap with the ligands less than the dxy,...

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University X-ray crystallography is a technique that uses X-rays to study the structure of molecules. X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments are routinely carried out with either single-crystal or powdered samples. Single-crystal XRD: Single-crystal XRD allows for absolute structure determination. With single-crystal XRD data, the exact atomic positions can be observed, and thus bond lengths and angles can be determined. This...

Physical Properties Of Minerals I: Crystals and Cleavage

2023

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder The physical properties of minerals comprise various measurable and discernible attributes, including color, streak, magnetic properties, hardness, crystal growth form, and crystal cleavage. Each of these properties are mineral-specific, and they are fundamentally related to a particular mineral’s chemical make-up and atomic structure. This experiment examines two properties that stem primarily from symmetric repetition of...

Supported Planar Bilayers for the Formation of Study of Immunological Synapses and Kinapse

Supported planar bilayers are powerful tools that can be used to model the molecular interactions in an immunological synapse. Here, we show methods for anchoring cell adhesion proteins known to modulate synapse formation to the upper leaflet of the lipid bilyer and visualize synapse formation using TIRF microscopy.
