Spatial Overlap

Spatial overlap is the degree to which atoms, molecules, or chemical distributions occupy the same region of space, a concept that helps explain bonding, reactivity, and molecular recognition. In molecular orbital theory, interacting atomic orbitals overlap when their wavefunctions share a compatible region and orientation, allowing electron density to combine constructively or destructively; distance, symmetry, and orbital alignment determine the interaction strength. Chemists use spatial overlap to interpret covalent bond formation, steric effects, coordination complexes, spectroscopy, and supramolecular assembly. Assessing overlap connects molecular geometry with measurable properties and supports predictions of structure and chemical behavior.

¹H NMR: Interpreting Distorted and Overlapping Signals

2024

Spin systems where the difference in chemical shifts of the coupled nuclei is greater than ten times J are called first-order spin systems. These nuclei are weakly coupled, and their chemical shifts and coupling constant can generally be estimated from the well-separated signals in the spectrum. As Δν decreases and the signals move closer, the doublets appear increasingly distorted. The intensities of the inner lines increase at the cost of those of the outer lines as the signals are slanted or...

Source: Laboratory of Jonathan Flombaum—Johns Hopkins University Attention refers to the limited human ability to select some information for processing at the expense of other stimuli in the environment. Attention operates in all sensory modalities: vision, hearing, touch, even taste and smell. It is most often studied in the visual domain though. A common way to study visual attention is with a spatial cueing paradigm. This paradigm allows researchers to measure the consequences of focusing...

Spatial Memory Testing Using Mazes

2023

Spatial learning and memory are neurological functions that allow us to remember important details associated with our environment. Scientists test this phenomenon in rodents using different types of mazes like Morris water maze, Radial water maze, and Barnes maze. By investigating spatial memory in rodents, neurobehavioral scientists can gain valuable understanding of how these processes are altered following brain damage in humans. Here, the neurobiology behind spatial memory is briefly...
