Tbaf

TBAF, or tetrabutylammonium fluoride, is a soluble fluoride reagent widely used in organic chemistry, particularly for removing silicon-based protecting groups. Its fluoride ion attacks the silicon atom in a silyl ether, forming a strong silicon–fluorine bond and releasing the protected alcohol or other functional group under suitable reaction conditions. Because TBAF combines a reactive fluoride source with an organic-soluble tetrabutylammonium counterion, it can promote desilylation in common organic solvents. This makes it valuable for revealing functional groups during multistep synthesis, preparing intermediates, and selectively transforming molecules containing silyl protecting groups.
