Thioglycoside Building Blocks

Thioglycoside building blocks are carbohydrate derivatives in which the anomeric hydroxyl group is replaced by a sulfur-containing substituent, creating versatile intermediates for assembling complex glycans. In chemical glycosylation, activation of the thioglycoside sulfur promotes formation of a reactive glycosyl species that transfers the sugar unit to an alcohol or other nucleophile, while protecting groups control the reactivity of remaining hydroxyl groups and help influence stereochemistry. These building blocks support the synthesis of oligosaccharides, glycoconjugates, and carbohydrate-based probes, enabling systematic studies of molecular recognition, biological signaling, and therapeutic targets in carbohydrate chemistry.

Here, we demonstrate the design and creation of four custom ballistic gelatin ultrasound phantoms for ultrasound-guided regional anesthesia training. We designed the phantoms using computer-aided design software, used 3D-printed models to create silicone molds, and then poured melted ballistic gel into the molds to create custom tissue layers.

The block-building task provides a rapid, objective, quantitative measurement of how often individuals choose to use their left versus right hand for reach-to-grasp action. After unilateral peripheral nerve injury, patients often shift to near-total usage of one hand, the direction of which is not predictable from other clinical factors.
