Continent Ileostomy

A continent ileostomy is a surgically created, internal intestinal reservoir that stores fecal material and allows controlled emptying without a continuously worn external ostomy appliance. Surgeons construct the reservoir from the ileum and form a nipple valve that limits leakage; the patient periodically inserts a catheter through a small abdominal stoma to drain its contents. This procedure can provide an alternative for people who cannot undergo ileal pouch-anal anastomosis or who have difficulty managing a conventional ileostomy. Clinical care focuses on catheterization, reservoir function, hydration, and monitoring for complications such as valve dysfunction, obstruction, or inflammation.

Osmoregulation in Insects

Malpighian tubules are specialized structures found in the digestive systems of many arthropods, including most insects, that handle excretion and osmoregulation. The tubules are typically arranged in pairs and have a convoluted structure that increases their surface area. Malpighian tubules extend from the digestive tract, typically the area between the midgut and hindgut, into the hemolymph—a mixture of blood and interstitial fluid found in insects and other arthropods, as well as most...

The History of Life on Earth Fossils of organisms that were different from anything alive today had been documented as early as the 17th century, but it was not until the early 19th century that scientists began to recognize that the successive layers of fossil bearing rocks were like successive pages in the history of life on earth. Although this recognition gave rise to the birth of the field of paleontology, the idea of complete global extinction of a species had yet to be fully accepted. At...

From Water to Land Kingdom Plantae first appeared about 410 million years ago as green algae transitioned from water to land. Though challenging, this transition benefited early colonizers in several ways. Initially, most living organisms (including plants and animals) were ocean dwelling, making aquatic environments crowded and highly competitive. In contrast, land was a relatively uncolonized environment with ample resources and little to no predators or competitors. Terrestrial environments...
