Multilayer Tablets

Multilayer tablets are solid oral dosage forms built from two or more distinct layers, allowing a single tablet to contain different formulations or release phases. During manufacture, powders or granules are placed and compressed sequentially, while layer composition, thickness, and separating barriers regulate how fluids reach each drug; immediate-release layers dissolve rapidly, whereas matrix or barrier layers slow diffusion or disintegration. In clinical pharmaceutics, this design can combine incompatible ingredients, separate drugs that require different release profiles, and support sequential or prolonged delivery. Multilayer tablets may improve dosing convenience and help align drug exposure with therapeutic needs, although manufacturing quality and layer integrity are critical.
