Privacy Confidentiality

Privacy and confidentiality are principles that protect a person’s control over personal information and require responsible handling of information shared in a professional relationship. In clinical care, privacy limits who may access patients and their data, while confidentiality guides how authorized clinicians collect, store, discuss, and disclose health information, typically through informed consent, secure records, and minimum-necessary access. These safeguards support respectful communication, informed decision-making, and trust between patients and healthcare teams, while allowing limited disclosure when patients authorize it or when law or serious safety concerns require it. Applying these principles strengthens clinical practice, research integrity, and patient participation in care.
