Composite Material Properties

Composite material properties describe how materials made from two or more distinct constituents perform as a combined system. Typically, a matrix binds and protects a reinforcing phase, while stresses transfer across the interface, allowing the composite’s stiffness, strength, density, toughness, and durability to differ from those of its individual components. Fiber orientation, reinforcement volume fraction, matrix selection, and interfacial bonding strongly influence anisotropy and failure behavior. Understanding these relationships helps engineers tailor composites for lightweight structures, aerospace components, automotive parts, construction materials, and biomedical devices, where improved strength-to-weight ratio, corrosion resistance, or functional performance can provide important design advantages.

2016

The integration of conductive nanoparticles, such as graphene nanoplatelets, into glass fiber composite materials creates an intrinsic electrical network susceptible to strain. Here, different methods to obtain strain sensors based on the addition of graphene nanoplatelets into the epoxy matrix or as a coating on glass fabrics are proposed.

Organic photovoltaic (OPV) materials are inherently inhomogeneous at the nanometer scale. Nanoscale inhomogeneity of OPV materials affects performance of photovoltaic devices. In this paper, we describe a protocol for quantitative measurements of electrical and mechanical properties of OPV materials with sub-100 nm resolution.

Experimental Implementation of a New Composite Fabrication Method: Exposing Bare Fibers on the Composite Surface by the Soft Layer Method

A protocol to expose bare fibers on the composite surface by eliminating resin rich area is presented. The fibers are exposed during fabrication of the composites, not by the post surface treatment. The exposed carbon composites exhibit high electrical conductivity in the through-thickness direction and high mechanical property.

The Effect of Construction and Demolition Waste Plastic Fractions on Wood-Polymer Composite Properties

2020

Secondary material streams have been shown to include potential raw materials for production. Presented here is a protocol in which CDW-plastic waste as a raw material is identified, followed by various processing steps (agglomeration, extrusion). As a result, a composite material was produced, and mechanical properties were analyzed.
