Core Flooding Setup

A core flooding setup is a laboratory system used to examine how fluids flow through porous rock or other permeable materials under controlled conditions. The apparatus typically saturates a core sample, applies confining pressure to simulate subsurface stresses, and uses pumps to inject one or more fluids while monitoring pressure, flow rate, and produced effluent. By varying fluid properties, injection rates, and pressure conditions, researchers can measure permeability, determine fluid displacement behavior, and evaluate recovery strategies. Core flooding experiments support reservoir characterization, enhanced oil recovery studies, carbon storage assessment, groundwater research, and the design of efficient subsurface engineering processes.

Responses to Drought and Flooding

Water plays a significant role in the life cycle of plants. However, insufficient or excess of water can be detrimental and pose a serious threat to plants. Under normal conditions, water taken up by the plant evaporates from leaves and other parts in a process called transpiration. In times of drought stress, water that evaporates by transpiration far exceeds the water absorbed from the soil, causing plants to wilt. The general plant response to drought stress is the synthesis of hormone...

The Nucleosome Core Particle

Nucleosomes are the DNA-histone complex, where the DNA strand is wound around the histone core. The histone core is an octamer containing two copies of H2A, H2B, H3, and H4 histone proteins. The paradox Nucleosomes, paradoxically, perform two opposite functions simultaneously. On the one hand, their main responsibility is to protect the delicate DNA strands from physical damage and help achieve a higher compaction ratio. While on the other hand, they must allow polymerase enzymes to access DNA...

Source: Hassan, J. A., et al. High-Throughput Identification of Resistance to Pseudomonas syringae pv. Tomato in Tomato using Seedling Flood Assay. J. Vis. Exp. (2020).This video demonstrates a method to screen for bacterial resistance in different tomato strains using ten-day-old seedlings inoculated with a bacterial suspension. It explains how bacteria invade through stomata, deliver effector proteins to suppress plant immunity, and how plant responses differ between susceptible and resistant...

Here, we present small core incubations for the measurement of sediment-water gas and solute exchange. These will provide reliable measurements of sediment-water exchange that assess the role of sediment in influencing biological and biogeochemical processes in aquatic ecosystems.
