Hydraulic Pump Operation

Hydraulic pump operation is the process of converting mechanical energy into fluid flow, enabling hydraulic systems to transmit power through pressurized liquid. As the pump’s rotating or reciprocating components create expanding chambers, they draw hydraulic fluid from a reservoir and then reduce chamber volume to force the fluid into a pressurized circuit; valves and system resistance regulate its direction and pressure. This operation supports actuators such as hydraulic cylinders and motors in machinery, manufacturing equipment, mobile vehicles, and aerospace systems. Understanding displacement, flow rate, pressure, efficiency, and fluid control helps engineers select pumps, diagnose failures, and improve system performance and safety.

Hydraulic Jumps

Source: Alexander S Rattner and Mahdi Nabil; Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA When liquid flows along an open channel at high velocity, the flow can become unstable, and slight disturbances can cause the liquid upper surface to transition abruptly to a higher level (Fig. 1a). This sharp increase in the liquid level is called a hydraulic jump. The increase in the liquid level causes a reduction in the average flow velocity.

Hydraulic Jump: Problem Solving

2025

To analyze a hydraulic jump in a rectangular channel with a flow speed of 6 meters per second, follow these steps:Calculate Effective Upstream Velocity:When the downstream gate closes, a hydraulic jump forms, traveling upstream at 2 meters per second. This wave speed combines with the initial channel flow velocity, creating an effective upstream velocity.Identify Flow Velocities Before and After the Hydraulic Jump:Upstream of the hydraulic jump, the effective flow velocity includes both the...

Hydraulic Jump

A hydraulic jump is a sudden rise in fluid depth in open channels, occurring when high-velocity (supercritical) flow transitions to low-velocity (subcritical) flow. This phenomenon requires an upstream Froude number greater than 1, as flows with Fr1<1 remain subcritical, making a hydraulic jump impossible due to the need for negative head loss, which violates thermodynamic principles. The characteristics of a hydraulic jump depend on the upstream Froude number and are classified as...

Here, we present a protocol for hydraulic extrusion of the spinal cord as well as identification and isolation of specific dorsal root ganglia (DRGs) in the same rodent. Compared to standard spinal cord isolation methods, this method is significantly faster and reduces the risk of tissue damage.

We describe a relatively rapid (30 min) and realistic method for simultaneously measurement of leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) and stomatal conductance (gs) for transpiring excised leaves. The method can be modified to measure the light and dehydration responses of Kleaf and gs.
