Open Loop Operation

Open loop operation is a control strategy in which a system produces an output without using feedback to compare that output with a desired reference. A controller sends a predetermined command to an actuator based on the input or programmed sequence, while the system operates without automatically correcting for disturbances, load changes, or measurement errors. This approach can provide simple, low-cost, and rapid control in applications such as timers, traffic signals, washing machines, and basic motor drives. Studying open loop operation establishes a foundation for understanding control-system performance and clarifies when feedback is needed to improve accuracy, stability, and adaptability.

We describe a novel surgical method for catheterizing 'intestinal loops' within the ileum of sheep. Once animals have recovered from surgery and have cleared antibiotics and analgesics, multiple treatments can be deposited directly in loops via the catheters.

Operating the Glovebox

2023

Robert M Rioux, Ajay Sathe, Zhifeng Chen, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA A glovebox is an isolated enclosure that is designed to maintain an inert atmosphere. The manipulation of chemicals or apparatus is done via the use of gloves, which allow operation while still maintaining an inert atmosphere. A positive pressure is utilized to compensate for any passive leaks. Objects can be transferred in and out of the box using an antechamber that acts as an airlock between the box...

Feedback Loops

In most cases, excessive hormone production is prevented by negative feedback—a loop that starts with a stimulus inducing the release of a particular substance, like a hormone, to maintain a certain level before triggering a signal that results in a decrease in further release of the hormone. Blood-sugar Levels For example, an increase in blood glucose levels releases the hormone insulin from beta cells of the pancreas into the bloodstream, delivering insulin to cells throughout the body.
