Polydioxanone

Polydioxanone is a biodegradable synthetic polymer, specifically an aliphatic polyester valued for its strength, flexibility, and gradual breakdown in engineered systems. Its ester bonds undergo hydrolysis in the presence of water, cleaving the polymer chains and allowing the material to lose mechanical integrity and eventually degrade into smaller products that the body can process. In engineering, polydioxanone is used prominently in absorbable surgical sutures and investigated for biomedical devices, tissue-engineering scaffolds, and controlled drug delivery. Its adjustable degradation behavior and temporary mechanical support make it useful when a structure must function during healing and then disappear without permanent removal.
