Polymeric Powders

Polymeric powders are finely divided particles made from synthetic or natural polymers, used as raw materials in manufacturing, surface treatment, and materials processing. Their performance depends on particle size, shape, composition, and thermal behavior: when heated, particles may soften, melt, and fuse, while pressure, electrostatic forces, or liquid binders can control their deposition and consolidation. In engineering, polymeric powders support additive manufacturing, powder coating, rotational molding, and composite fabrication. Controlling powder flow, packing, heating, and solidification helps determine dimensional accuracy, surface quality, mechanical strength, and production efficiency, making these materials important for lightweight, customizable, and resource-efficient components.

Source: Vy M. Dong and Jan Riedel, Department of Chemistry, University of California, Irvine, CA Polymers are made from macromolecules, which are composed of repeating units (the so called monomeric units). In our modern world, polymers play an important role. One of the first important polymers was nylon, which is a polyamide. It found widespread application in tooth brushes and stockings.

Single Crystal and Powder X-ray Diffraction

2023

Source: Tamara M. Powers, Department of Chemistry, Texas A&M University X-ray crystallography is a technique that uses X-rays to study the structure of molecules. X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments are routinely carried out with either single-crystal or powdered samples. Single-crystal XRD: Single-crystal XRD allows for absolute structure determination. With single-crystal XRD data, the exact atomic positions can be observed, and thus bond lengths and angles can be determined. This...

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Surface area and pore size distribution are attributes used by adsorbent and catalyst manufacturers and users to ensure quality control and to determine when products are at the end of their useful lives. The surface area of a porous solid is directly related to its adsorption capacity or catalytic activity. The pore size distribution of an adsorbent or catalyst is...
