Smart Filtering

Smart filtering is an engineering approach that automatically selects, separates, or suppresses information, signals, particles, or other inputs according to defined criteria. It works by combining sensing or data acquisition with rules, thresholds, statistical models, or machine-learning algorithms that evaluate incoming material and direct it toward acceptance, rejection, or prioritized processing. In digital systems, smart filtering can reduce noise, identify relevant data, and support real-time decisions; in physical systems, it can improve separation and process control. These capabilities help engineers manage complex information streams, increase efficiency, strengthen reliability, and develop responsive systems for manufacturing, communications, environmental monitoring, and infrastructure.

Are You Smart or Hardworking? How Praise Influences Children's Motivation

Source: Laboratories of Judith Danovitch and Nicholaus Noles—University of Louisville Imagine teaching two children how to skate. It is a hard task for both of them, and they fall down frequently. After falling down for the first time, one child says that skating is too hard and wants to go home. The other child seems to enjoy the challenge and eagerly gets back up after falling down each time. Why do the children have such different attitudes about the same task? One reason may be that they...

Passive Filters

Passive filters are utilized to shape the frequency spectrum of signals across a diverse array of applications. These filters, using only passive elements like resistors (R), inductors (L), and capacitors (C), are capable of selectively allowing or blocking certain frequency ranges without the need for external power sources. Low-Pass Filters Low-pass filters are designed to transmit signals with frequencies lower than the cutoff frequency, ωc, and attenuate those above it. The cutoff frequency...

Here, we present a study to evaluate the anti-viral efficacy of copper- and silver-based surface coatings on air filters. Using a bioaerosol chamber and Phi6 bacteriophage, this method quantifies viral inactivation and mechanical filtration efficiency for self-sanitizing indoor air technologies.

Active Filters

2025

Active filters are electronic circuits that use operational amplifiers (op-amps), resistors, and capacitors to filter out unwanted frequency components from a signal. A first-order low-pass active filter is designed to pass signals with a frequency lower than a certain cutoff frequency and attenuate frequencies higher than that cutoff frequency. The transfer function for a first-order low-pass active filter is: Where Af is the gain at low frequencies also known as the dc gain, s is the...
