Step Down Converter

A step-down converter, also called a buck converter, is a power-electronic circuit that produces a lower direct-current voltage from a higher input voltage while efficiently transferring electrical energy. It rapidly switches the input on and off, stores energy in an inductor during the on interval, and releases it through the load during the off interval; a diode or synchronous transistor provides current continuity, while a capacitor smooths the output, with average voltage governed largely by the switching duty cycle. Step-down converters are used in power supplies, battery-powered devices, embedded systems, and industrial equipment to regulate voltage, reduce energy loss, and protect sensitive electronics, making them fundamental to modern power management.

Flyback Converter

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. A flyback converter is a buck-boost converter, which can both buck and boost. It has electrical isolation between the input and the output using a coupled inductor or a "flyback transformer." This coupled inductor enables a turns ratio that provides both voltage step-up and step-down capability, like in a regular transformer but with energy storage using the air-gap of the coupled inductor. The...

DC/DC Boost Converter

2023

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. Boost converters provide a versatile solution to stepping up DC voltages in many applications where a DC voltage needs to be increased without the need to convert it to AC, using a transformer, and then rectifying the transformer output. Boost converters are step-up converters that use an inductor as an energy storage device that supports the output with additional energy in addition to the DC input...

DC/DC Buck Converter

Source: Ali Bazzi, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT. While it is simple to step up or down AC voltages and currents using transformers, stepping up or down DC voltages and currents in an efficient and regulated manner requires switching power converters. The DC/DC buck converter chops the input DC voltage using a series input switch, and the chopped voltage is filtered through the L-C low-pass filter to extract the average output voltage. The diode...

Scalable Step-by-Step Approach of Sustainable Bioplastic Production from Food Waste

2025

This protocol presents a scalable method for converting food waste into biodegradable polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) bioplastics. It utilizes arrested anaerobic digestion for food waste pretreatment, halophilic microbial fermentation for PHA biosynthesis, and a chemical-free downstream process for PHA recovery.

Energy-releasing Steps of Glycolysis

2019

Glycolysis is divided into two phases based on whether energy is utilized or released. While the first phase consumes ATP, the second phase produces energy in the form of ATP and NADH. The energy is released over a sequence of reactions that turns G3P into pyruvate. The energy-releasing phase—steps 6-10 of glycolysis—occurs twice, once for each of the two 3-carbon sugars produced during steps 1-5 of the first phase. The first energy-releasing step—the 6th step of glycolysis —consists of two...
