Turning Process

The turning process is a machining operation that removes material from a rotating workpiece to create cylindrical, conical, or contoured surfaces, making it fundamental to manufacturing engineering. In a lathe or computer numerical control (CNC) machine, a cutting tool advances along or across the workpiece at a controlled feed rate and depth of cut, shearing material into chips as spindle rotation supplies the cutting speed. Engineers select tool geometry, cutting conditions, and workpiece materials to balance surface finish, dimensional accuracy, tool life, and productivity. Turning supports the production of shafts, pins, threads, and other rotational components used in automotive, aerospace, energy, and general manufacturing applications.

Processes at Electrodes

2026

The electrode interacts with ions in the electrolyte solution at its interface. The rate of oxidation and reduction depends on the speed at which electrons can transfer through this interface. As ions attach to or leave the electrode surface, the electrode acquires a charge, and an electrical potential forms across the interface, making the process more difficult to reach equilibrium. The charge on the electrode affects the local ion concentrations in the solution, though thermal motion...

Isothermal Processes

A thermodynamic process that occurs at constant temperature is called an isothermal process. Heat slowly flows into the system or out of the system to maintain thermal equilibrium. Processes involving phase changes like water evaporation into steam or freezing water into ice at a constant temperature are examples of Isothermal Processes. An ideal gas can also undergo isothermal expansion or compression. For example, consider 1 mole of an ideal gas inside an isolated cylinder at initial volume V...

Work Done in an Adiabatic Process

Consider the adiabatic compression of an ideal gas in the cylinder of an automobile diesel engine. The gasoline vapor is injected into the cylinder of an automobile engine when the piston is in its expanded position. The temperature, pressure, and volume of the resulting gas-air mixture are 20 °C, 1.00 x 105 N/m2, and 240 cm3 , respectively. The mixture is then compressed adiabatically to a volume of 40 cm3. Note that, in the actual operation of an automobile engine, the compression is not...

Precipitation Processes

The experimental conditions in a gravimetric analysis should be optimized to maximize the particle size and purity of the obtained precipitate. Ideally, the concentration of the precipitating reagent should be low with effective stirring to maintain low relative supersaturation for the growth of large crystals. In homogeneous precipitation, the precipitant is slowly generated by a chemical reaction in the solution to avoid local reagent excesses. For example, urea decomposes gradually to...

Information-Processing Approach

The information-processing approach to cognitive development focuses on how infants perceive, attend to, store, and retrieve information. Habituation is a key learning process that reflects how infants adapt to repeated stimuli and provides insight into the efficiency of attention and memory.Habituation and Dishabituation as Learning IndicatorsHabituation happens when an infant’s response to a repeated stimulus decreases as it becomes familiar. For example, a newborn may briefly reduce their...
