Vacuum Level

Vacuum level is a measure of how far the pressure in a confined space falls below atmospheric pressure, making it a fundamental parameter in engineering systems that control gas environments. It is established by removing gas with pumps, while sensors such as absolute, gauge, capacitance manometer, and ionization gauges quantify the remaining pressure across different ranges. Accurate vacuum-level measurement and control support semiconductor fabrication, coating and evaporation, vacuum packaging, thermal processing, and laboratory instrumentation. Engineers select pump types, seals, materials, and measurement methods according to the required pressure range, gas load, cleanliness, and process stability.

This is most routinely achieved in the laboratory by the use of vacuum pumps. In addition to working at low pressures, vacuum pumps can also be used to enable rapid changing of the atmospheres in a reactor or flask by evacuation and backfilling.

(2022)This video demonstrates a vacuum infiltration method to introduce a bacterial pathogen into Arabidopsis plant leaves. The approach uses a prepared bacterial suspension and vacuum pulses to enable uniform entry through stomata, resulting in controlled leaf infection.

Controlled processes in human consciousness represent high-alert mental states where individuals deliberately focus their attention on achieving specific goals. Controlled processes can be seen in situations like mastering new technology, where a person might become so absorbed that they ignore surrounding distractions. Such processes involve selective attention, requiring one to concentrate on particular elements of experience while disregarding others. These are governed by executive...

Leveling Effect

2024

In acid-base chemistry, the leveling effect refers to the limitation imposed by the solvent on the strength of acids and bases in solution. When a base stronger than the solvent's conjugate base is used, it deprotonates the solvent until the base is entirely consumed, making it ineffective against weaker acids. Conversely, an acid stronger than the solvent's conjugate acid protonates the solvent until the acid is depleted, rendering it ineffective against weaker bases. Essentially, the solvent...

How to Build a Vacuum Spring-transport Package for Spinning Rotor Gauges

Here we describe how to build a robust spring-transport mechanism for a spinning rotor gauge. This device securely immobilizes the rotor and keeps it under vacuum during transportation. We also describe packaging that minimizes the risk of damage during transport. Tests show our design works for typical shocks during transport.
