Vortex Formation

Vortex formation is the process by which fluid flow develops a rotating structure around a central region, producing swirling motion and organized circulation. It occurs when velocity gradients, flow separation, or interactions with boundaries generate rotation; as angular momentum is redistributed, pressure typically decreases toward the vortex core and the surrounding fluid follows curved streamlines. In engineering, vortices influence aerodynamic lift and drag, turbine and pump performance, combustion, mixing, and heat transfer. Understanding their formation helps engineers predict flow instability, reduce unwanted vibration and energy loss, and design systems that use controlled swirling to improve transport and process efficiency.

Noninvasive Determination of Vortex Formation Time Using Transesophageal Echocardiography During Cardiac Surgery

2018

We describe a protocol to measure vortex formation time, an index of left ventricular filling efficiency, using standard transesophageal echocardiography techniques in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. We apply this technique to analyze vortex formation time in several groups of patients with differing cardiac pathologies.

Flow Visualization in a Water Tunnel: Observing the Leading-edge Vortex Over a Delta Wing

2023

Source: Jose Roberto Moreto, Gustaaf Jacobs and Xiaofeng Liu, Department of Aerospace Engineering, San Diego State University, San Diego, California The delta wing, shown in Figure 1D, is a popular design in high-speed airplanes due to its superb performance in transonic and supersonic flight regimes. This type of wing has a small aspect ratio and high sweep angle, which reduces drag at high subsonic, transonic and supersonic flight regimes. The aspect ratio is defined as the wing span divided...
