Mineral Associated Organic Matter

Mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) is the fraction of organic material bound to soil minerals or incorporated into mineral-associated particles, making it a key reservoir of carbon in terrestrial ecosystems. It forms when plant residues and microbial products interact with reactive mineral surfaces through adsorption, ligand exchange, co-precipitation, and physical protection within soil aggregates, which can reduce decomposition. Measuring MAOM helps researchers assess soil carbon storage, nutrient cycling, fertility, and responses to land-use change. Its persistence also informs climate models and environmental management by clarifying how soils stabilize carbon and how disturbance or improved management may alter long-term carbon dynamics.

Temperature Response of Soil Organic Matter Decomposition Rates: Construction and Applications of a Temperature Gradient Block

2026

We introduce a temperature gradient block and detail its construction and utilization. The block provides 22 discrete temperatures, linearly distributed between a user-defined range from 0 to 90 °C. Data collected from this setup enables testing and developing new theories on the temperature response of soil organic matter decomposition rates.

Physical Properties Of Minerals II: Polymineralic Analysis

2023

Source: Laboratory of Alan Lester - University of Colorado Boulder The physical properties of minerals include various measurable and discernible attributes, including color, streak, magnetic properties, hardness, crystal growth form, and crystal cleavage. These properties are mineral-specific, and they are fundamentally related to a particular mineral’s chemical make-up and atomic structure. This video examines several physical properties that are useful in field and hand sample mineral...
