Overconfidence is a cognitive bias in which people overestimate their knowledge, abilities, or control, making it an important influence on financial judgment and decision-making. In finance, it can arise when investors place excessive confidence in their forecasts, interpret limited success as evidence of superior skill, or express unwarranted precision about future returns; this may encourage frequent trading, concentrated portfolios, or insufficient attention to risk. Studying overconfidence helps explain systematic errors in investment behavior, market participation, and financial forecasting. Recognizing the bias can support more disciplined decisions through diversification, explicit uncertainty estimates, performance review, and reliance on evidence rather than intuition alone.
