Short Term Securities

Short-term securities are financial instruments designed to raise or invest funds for brief periods, typically with maturities of one year or less. They work by allowing governments, financial institutions, or corporations to borrow money through instruments such as Treasury bills, commercial paper, certificates of deposit, and repurchase agreements, while investors earn interest or a return from purchasing them at a discount and receiving their face value at maturity. In finance, these securities support cash management, provide liquidity, and help institutions meet near-term funding needs. Their short maturities generally reduce price sensitivity, although credit, interest-rate, and liquidity risks still require careful evaluation.

This graphical representation helps investors understand how securities are priced based on their inherent risk levels and provides a framework for evaluating investment opportunities. The SML's slope, defined by the market risk premium, indicates the additional return investors require for taking on higher risk.
