Yarrowia Lipolytica

Yarrowia lipolytica is a nonconventional, oleaginous yeast species valued for its ability to accumulate lipids and use diverse carbon sources. Its genetic toolkit enables targeted gene disruption, insertion, and regulation, allowing researchers to redirect metabolic flux toward storage oils, organic acids, or recombinant products. These properties make Y. lipolytica a useful model for studying lipid metabolism, carbon utilization, and cellular responses to nutrient conditions, while engineered strains support production of biofuels, specialty chemicals, and industrial enzymes. Its combination of tractable genetics and industrial potential helps connect fundamental genetic mechanisms with sustainable biomanufacturing.
