Conjunctival Goblet Cell Loss

Conjunctival goblet cell loss is the reduction of mucus-secreting epithelial cells in the conjunctiva, a change that can destabilize the tear film and compromise ocular-surface protection. These cells produce mucins that help spread tears and trap particles and microorganisms; inflammation associated with immune responses or ocular infection can injure goblet cells, lowering mucin production and contributing to irritation and surface disease. Studying this process helps researchers assess how infection and inflammation alter epithelial defenses, identify biomarkers of ocular-surface damage, and evaluate treatments aimed at preserving mucin secretion, restoring tear-film stability, and improving protection of the eye.

Line Loss

2024

The different configurations of source-load connections include wye (star) and delta connections. The relationship between line and phase voltages and currents varies depending on the configuration. When the source is supplying power, it is transmitted through the wires to the load, and during this transmission, some power is absorbed by the wires, leading to line loss. Line loss impacts power delivery efficiency in a balanced three-phase circuit. The symmetry in such a circuit simplifies the...

Source: Alexander S Rattner, Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA This experiment introduces the measurement and modeling of pressure losses in piping networks and internal flow systems. In such systems, frictional flow resistance from channel walls, fittings, and obstructions causes mechanical energy in the form of fluid pressure to be converted to heat. Engineering analyses are needed to size flow hardware to ensure...
