Viral Uptake Measurement

Viral uptake measurement is a set of methods used to quantify how efficiently viruses enter host cells, an early step that influences infection and immune recognition. Typically, cells are exposed to virus under defined conditions, then surface-bound particles are removed or distinguished from internalized particles using temperature shifts, protease or acid treatment, fluorescence labeling, microscopy, or flow cytometry. Measurements can reveal differences in receptor-dependent entry, cell susceptibility, and the effects of antibodies, inhibitors, or mutations. In immunology and infection research, these assays help link viral entry to downstream replication, compare host responses, and evaluate antiviral strategies and vaccine-induced blocking activity.

Measurement of Extracellular Fluorescent Glucose Analog Depletion: A Surrogate Measurement Technique to Assess Glucose Uptake in Mouse Organs Ex Vivo

2025

In this video, we demonstrate an ex vivo technique to measure extracellular glucose analog depletion in harvested mouse organs. It involves incubating the mouse tissue in a solution containing fluorescently-labeled deoxyglucose, which is taken up by the cells. The glucose analog uptake can be indirectly determined by measuring the fluorescence of the incubated medium.
