National Income Accounting

National income accounting is the systematic framework used to measure an economy’s production, income, and expenditure over a specified period, making it central to macroeconomic analysis. It organizes transactions among households, firms, government, and the foreign sector into measures such as gross domestic product (GDP), using the expenditure, income, and production approaches, which should yield equivalent totals when recorded consistently. These accounts help researchers track economic growth, consumption, investment, saving, trade, and government activity; compare economies or time periods; and assess policy effects, while also clarifying limitations such as unpaid work, distributional differences, and environmental costs that headline output measures may not capture.
