Transaction Settlements

Transaction settlements are the processes that finalize financial exchanges by transferring the agreed funds, securities, or other assets between counterparties. After a trade is executed, settlement systems verify the transaction, calculate each party’s obligations, and complete delivery through payment networks, clearing arrangements, custodians, or central bank infrastructure, often under defined timing and risk controls. In macroeconomics, settlement activity supports confidence in money and financial markets by ensuring that payments and asset transfers are completed reliably. Efficient settlement reduces counterparty and liquidity risk, while delays or disruptions can spread stress across banks, businesses, households, and international markets, making settlement infrastructure important to financial stability and economic activity.
