Concave Upward

Concave upward is a property of a function whose graph bends upward as the input increases, indicating that its slopes become progressively larger. For a twice-differentiable function, this behavior occurs where the second derivative is positive, f''(x) > 0; equivalently, the first derivative increases across the interval, and tangent lines typically lie below the graph. In calculus, identifying concavity helps locate inflection points, interpret rates of change, and assess the shape of functions in optimization and mathematical modeling. It also supports graphical reasoning about acceleration, growth, and how changing inputs influence a system’s output.

Upward Impending Motion

A square-threaded screw jack is a mechanical device widely used for lifting heavy loads or applying considerable force. Its operation is based on converting the force applied at its handle into a torsional moment, causing the upward impending motion of the screw. This movement is accomplished by overcoming the static friction between the threads of the screw and the jack. To better comprehend how a screw jack functions, consider the completely unraveled thread as a block in contact with the...

The protocol here is dedicated to investigating the free and quick maneuvering of water strider on water surface. The protocol includes observing the microstructure of legs and measuring the adhesion force when departing from water surface at different speeds.

Adhesion

Adhesion occurs when one type of molecule is attracted to a different molecule. Water exhibits adhesive properties in the presence of polar surfaces, such as glass or cellulose in plants. For instance, when water is poured into a glass, the positively charged hydrogen molecules of water are more attracted to the negatively charged oxygen molecules in the silica than to the oxygen in neighboring water molecules. Capillary action is a result of water’s adhesive tendencies. When a narrow glass...
