Decibels

Decibels are logarithmic units used to express the ratio between two quantities, especially power or amplitude, making very large ranges of sound and signal levels easier to compare mathematically. For power, a level in decibels is calculated as 10 times the base-10 logarithm of the measured-to-reference power ratio, while amplitude ratios use 20 times the logarithm when conditions such as impedance remain consistent. In acoustics, electronics, and telecommunications, decibels quantify sound intensity, gain, loss, and attenuation, helping researchers analyze dynamic range and distinguish relative changes that linear scales can obscure.

This article reports the development of a neuro-rehabilitation approach, "constraint-induced sound therapy (CIST)" for sudden sensorineural hearing loss. The aim of CIST is to prevent maladaptive cortical reorganization by using an enriched acoustic environment. CIST represents a safe, easy, inexpensive, and effective approach to treat sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

Habituation and prepulse inhibition of startle are operational measures of sensory gating. Sensory gating is disrupted in schizophrenia, and some other mental disorders and neurodegenerative diseases. We here describe a standard protocol to assess short-term and long-term habituation as well as prepulse inhibition of acoustic startle responses in rats and mice.

Different electrode coatings affect neural recording performance through changes to electrochemical, chemical and mechanical properties. Comparison of electrodes in vitro is relatively simple, however comparison of in vivo response is typically complicated by variations in electrode/neuron distance and between animals. This article provides a robust method to compare neural recording electrodes.

(2023)This video demonstrates the measurement of auditory brainstem response (ABR) in a mouse. Electrodes are placed on the head, behind the ear, and near the tail of an anesthetized mouse. Acoustic stimuli at various intensities are delivered, and electric signals generated are recorded as waveforms.
