Figure Movement

Figure movement is the transformation of a geometric figure from one position to another according to a defined rule, an essential idea in mathematics for analyzing shape, position, and symmetry. A movement can translate, rotate, reflect, or enlarge a figure by applying coordinate changes or geometric operations to every point while preserving selected properties such as angle measure, alignment, or distance. Studying these transformations helps students visualize relationships between figures, describe congruence and similarity, and solve geometric problems using coordinate planes, vectors, and symmetry. Figure movement also supports applications in computer graphics, design, robotics, and spatial modeling.

Uncertainty in Measurement: Significant Figures

2020

All the digits in a measurement, including the uncertain last digit, are called significant figures or significant digits. Note that zero may be a measured value; for example, if a scale that shows weight to the nearest pound reads “140,” then the 1 (hundreds), 4 (tens), and 0 (ones) are all significant (measured) values. A measurement result is properly reported when its significant digits accurately represent the certainty of the measurement process. Below are a set of rules to determine the...

Rules for Significant Figures

In any measurement, the precision of the measuring tool is an essential factor. An ordinary ruler, for example, can measure length to the closest millimeter; a caliper, on the other hand, can measure length to the nearest 0.01 mm. As a result, the caliper is a more precise measurement tool because it can measure extremely minute changes in length. The measurements will be more accurate if the measuring tool is more precise. It should be emphasized that when we represent measured values, the...

Significant Figures in Calculations

Uncertainty in measurements can be avoided by reporting the results of a calculation with the correct number of significant figures. This can be determined by the following rules for rounding numbers: When adding or subtracting numbers, round the result to the same number of decimal places as the number with the least number of decimal places. When multiplying or dividing numbers, round the result to the same number of digits as the number with the least number of significant figures. If...

Area Formulas for Plane Figures

Area formulas help determine how much surface a two-dimensional shape covers. In landscape design, these calculations are important for estimating the quantities of materials such as grass, soil, and paving. Different shapes require different formulas for area, so identifying the shape and its dimensions is the first step.Consider a landscape designer planning three sections of a park. The first section is a rectangular lawn measuring 18 meters by 12 meters. Using the area of a rectangle...
