Function Notation

Function notation is a standardized mathematical language for representing a function and showing how an output depends on an input, making relationships easier to analyze and communicate. Using symbols such as f(x), it names the function with f and identifies x as the input; evaluating f(a) means substituting a into the function’s rule to determine the corresponding output, subject to the function’s domain. In mathematics, this notation supports graphing, solving equations, comparing functions, and describing operations such as composition and inverse functions, while providing a foundation for modeling changing quantities in algebra, calculus, and applied fields.

Sigma notation, also known as summation notation, provides a concise method for representing the sum of a sequence of terms that follow a regular pattern. It utilizes the uppercase Greek letter sigma (∑), A typical expression is:In this form, k the index of summation is 1, the starting value, and n the ending value. The term ak represents the general term of the sequence. For example, the increasing sequence 5, 7, 9, ..., 23 over 10 terms can be expressed as:This simplifies the representation...

¹H NMR: Pople Notation

The Pople nomenclature system classifies spin systems based on the difference between their chemical shifts. Coupled spins are denoted by capital letters with subscripts indicating the number of equivalent nuclei. When the coupled nuclei have well-separated chemical shifts, they are assigned letters that are far apart in the alphabet, such as A and X. When the difference in chemical shifts is small, coupled nuclei are named using adjacent letters of the alphabet (AB, MN, or XY). A proton...

Scalar Notation

Scalar notation is a useful method for simplifying calculations involving vectors. When vectors are added or subtracted, their components can be added or subtracted separately using scalar notation. For instance, force, a vector quantity, can be broken down into its x and y components, called rectangular components, and then the magnitude and direction of these components can be determined using trigonometric functions. Consider a man pulling a rope from a hook in the northeast direction. The...

Cartesian Vector Notation

Cartesian vector notation is a valuable tool in mechanical engineering for representing vectors in three-dimensional space, performing vector operations such as determining the gradient, divergence, and curl, and expressing physical quantities such as the displacement, velocity, acceleration, and force. By using Cartesian vector notation, engineers can more easily analyze and solve problems in various areas of mechanical engineering, including dynamics, kinematics, and fluid mechanics. This...

Functional Groups

2020

Functional groups are a group of atoms with characteristic properties, which when linked to the carbon skeleton of a molecule, alter the properties of that molecule. For example, the presence of certain functional groups on a molecule will make them hydrophilic, whereas others will make them hydrophobic. These functional groups are an indispensable part of organic chemistry and important components of biological molecules, such as carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Each...
