Integral Evaluation

Integral evaluation is the process of finding the value or general form of an integral, a central operation in calculus used to quantify accumulation, area, and change. For a definite integral, the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus connects evaluation to an antiderivative, whose endpoint values are subtracted; substitution and integration by parts transform expressions to make this step possible, while numerical methods approximate integrals that lack elementary antiderivatives. Integral evaluation supports calculations of volumes, work, probability distributions, and rates in physics, engineering, economics, and other quantitative fields. Comparing exact and numerical approaches also helps researchers assess accuracy and model complex systems.

Source: Bucher, T., et al. Methodologies for Studying B. subtilis Biofilms as a Model for Characterizing Small Molecule Biofilm Inhibitors. J. Vis. Exp. (2016).This video demonstrates how biofilm matrix integrity influences bacterial resistance to ethanol by comparing colony-forming units in untreated and inhibitor-disrupted biofilms. Reduced CFUs in inhibitor-treated samples demonstrate that the extracellular matrix is essential for protecting biofilm-embedded cells from antimicrobial stress.

A novel Upflow Anaerobic Solid State (UASS) reactor was used for biogas production from fibrous feedstock. Digestate from UASS reactor was hydrothermally carbonized into HTC biochar in a pressurized batch reactor. The integration of the two bioenergy concepts was applied in this study to increase overall bioenergy production.
