Accelerometer Assessment

Accelerometer assessment is a method for quantifying body movement and physical activity using a small sensor that records changes in acceleration over time. The device detects motion across one or more axes, converts acceleration signals into movement counts or activity metrics, and can classify behaviors such as sedentary time, walking, and vigorous activity. In medicine, these measurements support objective evaluation of mobility, functional status, exercise adherence, sleep-related movement, and recovery during rehabilitation. Compared with self-reported activity, accelerometer data can provide continuous, time-stamped evidence that helps clinicians monitor disease progression, assess treatment outcomes, and guide personalized care.

Assessment of Physical Activity Intensity with Accelerometers and Oxygen Consumption

2025

Here, we present a protocol to assess physical activity intensity levels measured with indirect calorimetry and two accelerometers (on the right wrist and waist) during an incremental walking-jogging test (from 0.84 to 2.37 m/s) on an oval track. The results show differences among the physical intensity assessed through those methods.

Developing a Behavioral Box for Assessing Prepulse Inhibition and Neural Activity in Psychiatric Animal Models

2025

This protocol presents a microcontroller-based behavioral box to assess prepulse inhibition (PPI) by collecting acceleration data from a sensor beneath the box. This data evaluates sensory gating deficits in socially isolated rats, with an added method for synchronizing data with neuronal activity to advance neurophysiology studies on behavioral disorders.

Substantiating Appropriate Motion Capture Techniques for the Assessment of Nordic Walking Gait and Posture in Older Adults

The aim was to substantiate optimal use of data collection techniques for Nordic walking gait and posture analysis. Three-dimensional motion capture should be used during short duration analysis (i.e. single gait cycle), while accelerometry should be employed for longer duration analysis (i.e. repeated cycles) like a 6 Minute Walk Test.

Here, we present a comprehensive behavioral test battery, including the novel tank, Shoaling, and social preference tests, to effectively determine the potential neurotoxic effects of chemicals (e.g., methamphetamine and glyphosate) on adult zebrafish using a single tank. This method is relevant to neurotoxicity and environmental research.
