Alternative Therapy

Alternative therapy refers to healthcare practices used instead of conventional medical treatment, often drawing on approaches outside mainstream biomedical care. These therapies may act through physiological processes, behavioral changes, practitioner-patient interactions, or contextual and placebo-related effects, with mechanisms and evidence varying substantially among interventions. In medicine, alternative therapy can address symptoms, support wellbeing, or accompany efforts to manage chronic conditions, but it should be evaluated for effectiveness, safety, potential interactions, and the risks of replacing proven care. Understanding these factors helps patients and researchers make informed decisions and guides rigorous study of integrative and patient-centered treatment approaches.

Alternative RNA Splicing

2020

Alternative RNA splicing is the regulated splicing of exons and introns to produce different mature mRNAs from a single pre-mRNA. Unlike in constitutive splicing where a single gene produces a single type of mRNA, alternative splicing allows an organism to produce multiple proteins from a single gene and plays an important role in protein diversity. There are five types of alternative RNA splicing that vary in the ways the pre-mRNA segments are removed or retained in the mature mRNA. The first...

Null and Alternative Hypotheses

2023

The actual hypothesis testing begins by considering two hypotheses. They are termed the null hypothesis and the alternative hypothesis. These hypotheses contain opposing viewpoints. The null hypothesis, denoted by H0 is a statement of no difference between the variables—they are not related. This can often be considered the status quo. As a result if you cannot accept the null, it requires some action. The alternative hypothesis, denoted by H1 or Ha, is a claim about the population that is...

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Introduction to C. elegans The nematode (roundworm) Caenorhabditis elegans, commonly known as C. elegans, is a widely used non-vertebrate animal model for studying fundamental biological processes. Because many cellular and...
