Central Blood Volume

Central blood volume is the portion of circulating blood contained within the thoracic vessels and heart, where it directly influences cardiac filling and systemic circulation. It changes as venous tone, body position, respiration, and intravascular fluid distribution alter venous return and ventricular preload, thereby affecting stroke volume and cardiac output through the Frank-Starling mechanism. In medicine, assessing central blood volume helps clinicians interpret hemodynamic instability in conditions such as hemorrhage, shock, and heart failure. Measurements and related indicators support decisions about fluid administration, vasoactive therapy, and cardiovascular monitoring, while improving understanding of how the circulation adapts to physiological stress.

Measuring Cerebral Blood Volume in the Auditory Cortex Using Vascular Space Occupancy

2025

Position a human participant’s head within the head coil of a functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, system.Employ vascular space occupancy or VASO, a technique to measure changes in cerebral blood volume, or CBV, the blood volume within the brain.Begin by applying an inversion recovery pulse to suppress signals from blood, allowing only signals from the surrounding tissue within the region to be detected.Next, use MRI-compatible earbuds to deliver auditory stimuli. The stimuli reach...

The Central Dogma

2019

Overview The central dogma of biology states that information encoded in the DNA is transferred to messenger RNA (mRNA), which then directs the synthesis of protein. The set of instructions that enable the mRNA nucleotide sequence to be decoded into amino acids is called the genetic code. The universal nature of this genetic code has spurred advances in scientific research, agriculture, and medicine. RNA Is the Missing Link between DNA and Proteins In the early 1900s, scientists discovered...

Generation of a Murine Model with a Central Nervous System Infection

2025

This video demonstrates the generation of a mouse model with a CNS infection. A suckling pup is injected with the virus both intracranially and intraperitoneally. The virus spreads, infecting the CNS causing neuronal cell death and inflammation. The pup is assessed for symptoms of infection as the disease progresses.
