Digital Wound Features

Digital wound features are measurable characteristics captured from wound images or electronic assessments to describe tissue appearance, size, shape, color, and healing status. Image-analysis systems derive these features by segmenting the wound from surrounding skin and quantifying properties such as area, perimeter, texture, tissue composition, and color distribution, often under standardized imaging conditions. In medicine, these measurements support objective wound documentation, monitoring of changes over time, and assessment of treatment response. When combined with clinical examination and patient history, digital wound features can improve consistency in communication, enable longitudinal tracking, and contribute to research on automated wound classification and predictive care.

Wounds represent a global health challenge. This study developed a standardized photo booth utilizing digital planimetry to minimize wound measurement variability. Monitoring wounds in mice over 14 days revealed an initial increase in wound area and perimeter, followed by gradual closure. This methodology may aid in evaluating wound closure kinetics in pre-clinical models.
