Endotracheal Tube

An endotracheal tube is a flexible medical device inserted through the mouth or nose into the trachea to maintain a patent airway and support breathing. Its hollow lumen allows oxygen delivery, mechanical ventilation, and removal of airway secretions, while an inflatable cuff can create a seal that helps limit air leakage and aspiration around the tube. Clinicians use endotracheal intubation during surgery, respiratory failure, cardiac arrest, and other emergencies requiring controlled ventilation or airway protection. Proper placement and continuous monitoring are essential because complications can include airway trauma, misplaced insertion, and ventilation-related injury.

Endotracheal Tube Extubation

2025

Endotracheal tube extubation is a critical procedure in weaning patients from mechanical ventilation. It involves physically removing the oral or nasal endotracheal (ET) tube, marking the final step in liberating a patient from ventilatory support. Procedure Extubation removes the endotracheal tube (ETT) from the patient on mechanical ventilation. It requires a well-coordinated, multidisciplinary approach involving physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals.

We have developed a simple, reliable, and relatively inexpensive method for endotracheal intubation in mice via direct laryngoscopy using an otoscope with a 2.0 mm speculum. This technique is atraumatic and can be used for repeated measurements in chronic experiments. We find it superior to tracheostomy or previously reported nonsurgical techniques.

COVID-19 / Coronavirus Outbreak: Protecting The Airway - Endotracheal Intubation

In pandemic times, medical staff is becoming a key resource in fighting the infection. To achieve the best medical care, relevant techniques and procedures have to be taught to medical staff to reduce the risk of infection. COVID patients often need mechanical ventilation due to progredient respiratory insufficiency, so an endotracheal intubation becomes a critical procedure in managing these patients. This procedure has an increased risk of infection due to aerosol formation and working with...
