Low-quality Tumor Biopsies

Low-quality tumor biopsies are tissue specimens that provide insufficient, poorly preserved, or unrepresentative material for accurate tumor diagnosis and characterization, making them a critical challenge in medicine. They may contain too few viable tumor cells, extensive necrosis, crush or fixation artifacts, or tissue that does not reflect the lesion, limiting histologic interpretation and molecular testing. Pathologists and clinical teams assess specimen adequacy before relying on results, sometimes integrating imaging, repeat biopsy, or alternative samples. Improving collection, handling, and processing can reduce nondiagnostic results, support biomarker assessment, guide treatment selection, and prevent delays in patient care.
