Physical Activity Monitoring

Physical activity monitoring is the systematic measurement of movement and activity patterns to quantify how much, how often, and how intensely a person moves, supporting health assessment and medical decision-making. It commonly uses wearable accelerometers that detect changes in body acceleration and translate them into measures such as activity counts, duration, intensity, sedentary time, and step number; activity diaries and questionnaires can provide additional context. In medicine, these data help characterize functional status, evaluate rehabilitation and treatment outcomes, assess links between activity and chronic disease, and support personalized recommendations. Continuous monitoring can also reveal changes in mobility that may not appear during brief clinical visits.

2015

This report describes a method for measuring Drosophila larval activity using the TriKinetics Drosophila Activity Monitor. The device employs infrared beams to detect movements of up to 16 individual animals. Data can be analyzed to represent motion parameters including rates and the positions of the animals within the assay chambers.

Assessment of Physical Activity Intensity with Accelerometers and Oxygen Consumption

2025

Here, we present a protocol to assess physical activity intensity levels measured with indirect calorimetry and two accelerometers (on the right wrist and waist) during an incremental walking-jogging test (from 0.84 to 2.37 m/s) on an oval track. The results show differences among the physical intensity assessed through those methods.

Drosophila Activity Monitor (DAM): A Method to Measure Locomotor Activity in Flies

2023

This video describes the Drosophila activity monitor (DAM) system used to track locomotor activity. Researchers use activity data collected from the DAM to study circadian rhythms in fruit flies. The featured protocol clip shows how to load flies in the device and record activity data for circadian experiments.

Assessing the Accuracy of Fitness Smartwatch Data for Cardiovascular and Physical Activity Monitoring: A Validation Study in Digital Health

Wearable technology has low cost and offers convenient monitoring of physiological data. However, the accuracy and reliability of these devices require cautious assessment to ensure their effectiveness and safety for users. This report describes the validation process of a commercial smartwatch in monitoring physiological data and physical activity.

Isothermal Microcalorimetry to Monitor Metabolic Activity in Bacteria

Take serial dilutions of a bacterial culture and add aliquots into calorimetric vials containing growth medium.Load the sealed vials into the multi-well plate of an isothermal microcalorimeter to measure metabolic heat production. The device is held at a constant temperature to ensure the detected heat originates solely from bacterial metabolism. As bacteria metabolize nutrients and proliferate, they release heat that sensors detect in real time.In parallel, incubate identical vials in an...
