Placebo Controlled Trial

A placebo-controlled trial is a clinical study that compares a treatment with a placebo, an inactive intervention designed to resemble the treatment, to determine whether observed effects result from the treatment itself. Participants are typically assigned at random to treatment or placebo groups, and blinding may prevent participants, clinicians, or assessors from knowing assignments; this helps control for expectations, natural disease changes, and other sources of bias. In medicine, this design provides rigorous evidence about a therapy’s efficacy and safety, supports regulatory decisions, and helps distinguish genuine pharmacological effects from placebo responses.
