Primary Human Mesothelial Cells

Primary human mesothelial cells are non-transformed cells isolated directly from the mesothelium, the thin lining of serous body cavities and organs, where they support tissue protection and homeostasis. These cells form a polarized surface that produces lubricating factors, regulates fluid movement, and responds to injury or inflammatory signals by altering adhesion, permeability, and mediator release. In medicine, primary human mesothelial cells provide physiologically relevant models for studying pleural, peritoneal, and cardiovascular diseases, fibrosis, inflammation, and tumor progression. Their use in culture can help evaluate disease mechanisms, host responses, and potential therapies more accurately than many immortalized cell lines.

Ovarian cancer cell invasion into the mesothelial lining of the peritoneum is a dynamic process over time. Utilizing a real time analyzer, the invasive capacity of ovarian cancer cells in a spheroid-mesothelial cell co-culture model can be quantified over prolonged time periods, providing insights into factors regulating the metastatic process.
