Pulmonary Capillary Wedge Pressure

Pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) is an indirect hemodynamic measurement used to estimate left atrial pressure and assess left-sided cardiac filling, making it valuable in cardiovascular and critical care medicine. During right-heart catheterization, a balloon-tipped pulmonary artery catheter temporarily occludes a small pulmonary arterial branch, creating a static column of blood that transmits pressure from the pulmonary veins and left atrium to the catheter. Clinicians interpret PCWP alongside cardiac output and other pressures to evaluate pulmonary congestion, distinguish causes of pulmonary hypertension, and assess conditions such as left-sided heart failure. Accurate measurement depends on appropriate catheter position, balloon inflation, and timing within the respiratory cycle.

An experimental method to measure geometrical parameters and the apparent advancing contact angles describing capillary wicking in unidirectional synthetic and natural fabrics is proposed. These parameters are mandatory for the determination of the capillary pressures that must be taken into account for liquid composite molding (LCM) applications.

A wedge is a simple machine that serves various purposes, such as adjusting the elevation of structural or mechanical parts, providing stability for heavy objects, and splitting a body into two parts. This versatile tool can amplify an applied force, making it easier to manipulate large or heavy objects. Consider using a wedge to lift a heavy slab. Here, the wedge functions by converting the applied force into a much larger force directed almost perpendicular to the initial force. This...
