Retroperitoneal Dissection

Retroperitoneal dissection is a surgical technique used to expose and separate structures located behind the peritoneal cavity, including the kidneys, adrenal glands, major vessels, ureters, and lymph nodes. The procedure follows anatomical tissue planes along the posterior abdominal wall, mobilizing the peritoneum while identifying and preserving critical vessels, nerves, and urinary structures. In medicine, retroperitoneal dissection supports anatomical education and procedures such as tumor removal, lymph-node assessment, adrenal or renal surgery, and vascular repair. Mastery of these relationships helps clinicians improve operative planning, reduce tissue injury, and manage complex pathology in a confined anatomical region.

Intervertebral disc degeneration is a significant contributor to back pain and a leading cause of disability worldwide. Numerous animal models of intervertebral disc degeneration exist. We demonstrate an ovine model of intervertebral disc degeneration, utilizing a drill bit, which achieves a consistent disc injury and reproducible level of disc degeneration.

The zebrafish kidney is home to both renal and hematopoietic adult stem/progenitor cells, and represents an outstanding opportunity to study these cell types and their progeny in a vertebrate model organism. Here, we demonstrate a detailed dissection procedure that enables the researcher to identify and surgically remove the adult zebrafish kidney, which can be used for applications such as cell isolation, transplantation, and expression studies of kidney and/or blood cell populations.
